O Projeto Celanus é uma iniciativa de conservação da biodiversidade desenvolvida numa área dunar localizada no Parque Natural do Litoral Norte, uma área protegida a nível nacional em Portugal situada no concelho de Esposende. Este projeto é implementado em colaboração com o Instituto da Conservação da Natureza e das Florestas (ICNF), entidade pública responsável pela gestão e proteção dos recursos naturais, áreas protegidas e património florestal em Portugal.
O projeto visa restaurar os ecossistemas locais removendo plantas invasoras e promovendo a reflorestação com espécies autóctones como Camarinha (Corema album), Medronheiro (Arbutus unedo) e Pinheiro-manso (Pinus pinea). Além disso, envolve a criação e restauração de zonas húmidas através da construção de pequenos lagos e lagoas, que diversificam os habitats naturais e promovem a biodiversidade da flora e fauna.
Outro aspeto importante do projeto é a restauração da dinâmica hídrica local, com melhorias na conectividade de habitats e o estabelecimento de cortinas arbustivas formadas por espécies nativas, reforçando a funcionalidade ambiental do ecossistema. A iniciativa também inclui um rigoroso programa de monitorização da biodiversidade para acompanhar a evolução dos habitats e apoiar intervenções técnicas. O Projeto Celanus promove a conservação ambiental em harmonia com o desenvolvimento do turismo sustentável, contribuindo para a restauração ecológica e o valor acrescentado da biodiversidade no Parque Natural do Litoral Norte. /
The Celanus Project is a biodiversity conservation initiative developed in a dune area located within the Northern Coastal Natural Park, a nationally protected area in Portugal situated in the municipality of Esposende. This project is implemented in collaboration with the Institute for the Conservation of Nature and Forests (ICNF), a government entity responsible for the management and protection of natural resources, protected areas, and forest heritage in Portugal.
The project aims to restore local ecosystems by removing invasive plants and promoting reforestation with native species such as Camarinha (Corema album), Medronheiro (Arbutus unedo) and Stone Pine (Pinus pinea). Additionally, it involves the creation and restoration of wetlands through the construction of small lakes and ponds, which diversify natural habitats and promote the biodiversity of flora and fauna.
Another important aspect of the project is the restoration of local water dynamics, with improvements in habitat connectivity and the establishment of tree-shrub screens formed by native species, reinforcing the environmental functionality of the ecosystem. The initiative also includes a rigorous biodiversity monitoring program to track habitat evolution and support technical interventions. The Celanus Project promotes environmental conservation in harmony with sustainable tourism development, contributing to ecological restoration and the enhancement of biodiversity in the Northern Coastal Natural Park.
